Heirloom is a restaurant located in The Study at Yale Hotel's ground floor, in the art district of New Haven and Yale University campus.  Having grown up in the Hamden/New Haven area and frequenting the Yale Art Gallery here, I was really delighted to see a farm to table restaurant of this quality come into the area.

Walking into Heirloom your greeted with a study / art gallery / lounge environment. Dining that night with one of my best girlfriends AP, we were pleasantly surprised with just how elegant this restaurant was.  We sat along the windows which is a whole wall looking out onto Chapel Street in New Haven. Our waiter was a pleasure and I wish I could remember his name!  While looking over the menu we were given slice fresh bread and a horse radish butter, served in a green basket that you would normally see when you go berry picking at a local patch. (Be steal my heart with farm accessories!)

We both ordered cocktails off their list, I got a Shiso Grand that had muttled strawberries and mint. AP got the Moonshine Lemonade, with Onyx Moonshine.

Between AP and myself it took us forever to finally decide on what we were actually going to order. Everything looked delicious! One of our Table Snacks is pictured above, the Warm Local Ricotta (one AP's choices). It was addicting, served warm from the oven the cheese just melts on the the perfectly toasted soft bread.
We also ordered another Table Snack of Lamb meatballs and a Starter of Pumpkin Falafel.
{ I have learned my lesson and will from now on take pictures of the menu for better descriptions! I will blame this on the fact that AP and I were in a very deep 'catch up session' and I lost track. }

New Haven Clam Risotto
PictureAP's dinner of the Lamb Ragu
 My dinner choice was the New Haven Clam Risotto {pictured above}  was just excellent. Clams were done right and not chewy, which I hate, sitting on top of a creamy risotto and melted cheese. With a kick of spices to really get your taste buds going I have to say I was really happy with this choice. Not normally one to choose the seafood dish, this one had me wishing I did more often.

AP chose the Lamb Ragu, which was done in a house made pasta and shredded lamb {a loving portion too!} was folded into it. Having the best friend I do, we each tried each other's dishes. AP's lamb was very flavorful and there was no questioning if there was lamb in the dish!

Needless to say we were quite happy with both of our meals.

We made a start to finish night of Heirloom by ordering our finale in the form of the Warm Chocolate Cake dessert. Chocolate lovers, this is heaven. A warm chocolate cake topped with a frozen ice cream of Nutella.  As both AP and I dug into this little treat, there was not much talking just looks of joy. I very much recommend the Warm Chocolate Cake as a ending to an evening at Heirloom.

In conclusion, I highly recommend this as an intimate night for those looking for a local restaurant in New Haven that is supporting local foods as well.

Always,
B.
